Running with Asha
Asha for Education is a volunteer run organization aiming to catalyze socio-economic change in India through education. The objectives of the group are:
- To provide access to education for underprivileged children in India
- To promote universal education and decrease child labor
- To support grass roots initiatives in deprived and marginalized communities in India
- To address, whenever possible, other issues affecting human life such as health care, environmental and socio-economic issues, women's issues, human rights issues, etc.
As a part of Team Asha this runner has committed to meet the above objectives through your support. Please read the runner's personal statement below and use the donate button on the right to make a contribution to the runner's objective.
Asha means hope…and that’s exactly what it gives to an underprivileged child in India for his/her future. Asha supports a total of 400 education related projects in 24 states in India which focus on primary education without any regional, religious or gender bias.
Why do we run? : We find running to be the best way to challenge our endurance levels and raise funds for a good cause all at the same time. Some of us are seasoned runners and some first time long distance runners. The quest to be able to complete the full marathon relay and raising funds for Asha keeps us on track on our training schedule.
Our Goal : Our goal this year is to raise $1000 so that these funds can be dispersed to the Jabala Action Research Organization in the slums of Kalabagan, West Bengal . For details , please click on the following link : http://www.ashanet.org/projects/project-view.php?p=915

How your donation can help : Your donation can help children in these slums to get educated in schools and get coaching help so that they do not lag behind and eventually drop out of school. The funds will also cater to the work readiness program which will help them sustain their livelihood by indulging in productive trades. Some may even be enrolled in colleges. It will also help them with cultural therapy like painting, games like football, karate etc. and enhance their confidence levels….especially girl children. Since most of these kids come from a background of domestic abuse, your donation will help them get educated and not be forced into child labor.
Asha for Education earned four out of four stars from Charity Navigator beacause of its zero overhead policy - less than 2% administrative expenses. So, every last cent of your donation goes directly to the projects sponsored….. and that is why a donation of $25 takes care of the education and living expenses of a child for a complete month and $50 takes care of the child’s education for half a year!
Tax deductions: Contributions to Asha are 100% tax deductible in the US (under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code), and 50% tax deductible in India (under section 80G of the Income tax act).
